Q: I need to put word doc and pdf, and ppt files in a directory on my website, and then create a search engine to find the documents by topic and keyword. With the topics, some docs will fall into 2-3 different topics, so I need to search by Meta tag or something to identify the individual doc by.... I donâÃâ¬Ãâ¢t want to convert the docs to html format; I want to keep them in their original format for downloading purposes.
A: You probably need to build a specialized search script. Possibly one where you actually set up a MYSQL database with your keywords related to a specific file search the database and return the file ie you are not searching the files just your database. I am not aware of any off the shelf solutions for this. An alternative would be to build a simple html file with the keywords and maybe some text from the files and add a javascript redirect to the actual file. Let the html be crawled by SE's (ie possibly add an XML SiteMap) and as they do not run javascript they will see the html but when a browser goes to the page the javasript redirects to the actual file. This approach does have some search engine positive and negatives ie SE may see your html page as poor quality and keyword stuffed (this depends upon your content) but the pages would be widely indexed, and you could simply use a local Google search box on your site as the search engine.
