Q: I am using the PHP option for dynamically getting the site map, however some search engine optimization programs are reporting broken links caused by the php page. I realize that there is a delay while processing. Could this be causing the problem? I also have a link to the php page in the footer of the site (for SSI). Should this be removed? Thanks.
A: Does Goolge report any broken links? If so you should investigate as there maybe non valid links in your pages. The php xml sitemap is not really designed to be used as a link in your page as it returns an xml file specifically deigned for google, if you remove it you should have no problems. We are releasing a new version Dynamic SiteMap (within the month?) that will include a dynamic html sitemap option and this could/should be used in your pages and will be both human and search engine readable.

Q: Hi - Great sitemap generator. I have a couple of issues and I'm not sure if it's me, the configuration or the script :( . When I try to create a sitemap I get urls that seem to include '..' which doesn't look right and where it is chopping off a couple of directories.
A: Thanks for the feedback. Your problem is most likely due to the use of the relative directory syntax ../ in your web pages. SiteMap XML extracts href links from pages. If it finds href text without the domain ie /mydir/mypage.html or in your case ../mypage.html it adds the domain and this is used as the url in the SiteMap. So if the web page includes ../mypage.html then this is appended to the domain and that is what appears as the url in the site map ie http://www.mydomain.com/../mypage.html , however if the href is /mydir/mypage.html or http://www.mydomain.com/mydir/mypage.html then http://www.mydomain.com/mydir/mypage.html is used. To handle this you can remove the ../ syntax from your web pages or set ../ in the Exclude URL's with and then if mypage.html is not in any pages as a href link without the syntax ../ ie as http://www.mydomain.com/mydir/mypage.html or /mydir/mypage.html either add it to a page so it is picked up or simply add it to the Start URLs. Hope this makes sense.

Q: Thanks for your answer, but what should i do now, do i need delete some of the urls in my site? But i use a script which generate these webpage urls automatically? Do I need ask the script maker to change the script when it generates webpage urls?
A: To be correct the webpage urls should really changed. As a temporary solution however if you run a static SiteMap (ie not dynamic) you can manually modify the the SiteMap XML contents ie change the E to the encoded value and it will run ok. If you run a dynamic Site Map XML you could try excluding the url at fault and then adding the same url as a start url but using the correct encoded values ie the Ë.

Q: First, great tool! I've noticed that the output list does not include URLs that refer to directories, i.e. don't have a file name extension and rely on the server to use its default file (e.g. index.html). I've also noticed that file names with spaces are not included in the output. I really need both of these. Is there a way to "turn them on" without hacking your code?
A: Thanks for the feedback. On the no file name extension if you add the directory name to the Include URLs with variable they should be listed (as long as they are linked within the site). On the spaces issue file names should not have spaces, and Google site map will not validate if it has spaces, spaces must be url encoded as %20 to ensure correct operation across browsers/systems.
